What P20EE means
On Renault and Dacia vehicles equipped with Blue dCi engines, the warning message “Check anti-pollution system” is often accompanied by fault code P20EE. This code means that the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system is working below its efficiency threshold: the exhaust gas treatment is not reducing NOx sufficiently.
The physical cause is often crystallization clogging the AdBlue injector. The injector sits in the exhaust line, and blocked delivery can explain why the SCR system no longer works. Cleaning or replacing that injector is the logical repair.
The software lock-in
There is a second layer that changes the situation. When P20EE appears, the engine computer starts a countdown. Depending on the market, the dashboard displays “engine lock in 1000 km” or “engine lock in 600 miles”. At the end of that countdown, the vehicle will not restart. This is not a suggestion; it is a refusal to start.
Clearing the fault code with a diagnostic tool is not a repair and does not address the underlying cause. More importantly, after an independent repairer cleans or replaces the AdBlue injector, the countdown may continue because the engine ECU is locked by the software. The only way to clear the countdown is a dealer-only software reset. As a result, the vehicle owner faces an additional repair cost that has nothing to do with the mechanical fault.
What this means for your rights
This repair logic shifts the problem from the hardware to the software. If the same P20EE fault recurs across the same engine family, it points to a defect affecting a series of vehicles rather than an isolated maintenance issue.
For owners, the practical point is this: do not accept a simple reset as a final repair. The software lock-in should be treated as part of the faulty system. Consumer protection and hidden-defect law can support a claim when the vehicle is not durably repaired. Keep copies of every warning message, diagnostic reading, and invoice, and note whether the countdown continued after an injector repair.
