AdBlue repairs on Discovery Sport, Evoque and E-Pace: what the bill covers, and the recourse when support is refused

A warning such as “Incorrect Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality Detected”, followed by a countdown before the engine refuses to restart, does not by itself identify the faulty part. On the Land Rover Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar E-Pace, the same message can lead to very different repair bills.

What the quote actually covers

An SCR repair may concern the injector, the sensor, the tank or the control unit. These are separate components, and the estimate varies considerably depending on which one the diagnosis points to. A figure read online therefore says little about a given vehicle: what matters is the component named in the diagnostic report, and the reasoning behind that identification.

A documented case: more than $8,000, and the cause was elsewhere

An independent workshop in the United States published the full diagnosis of a Land Rover V6 diesel with 92,000 miles. The dashboard displayed the DEF quality warning and a countdown before the engine would refuse to restart. Over three years the owner had paid for the complete DEF system to be replaced twice — tank, injector and lines — plus a pump replacement and sensor work at a third garage. The invoices exceeded $8,000, and the warning returned each time.

The workshop found that every component of the DEF system tested correctly, including the one paid for twice. Passing a borescope through the port of a removed sensor, the technicians examined the SCR catalyst substrate and found it disintegrating: cracked, with pieces missing. The NOx sensors were setting codes because the catalyst behind them had failed. A quality or efficiency code describes the whole chain — fluid, injector, heater, sensors, catalyst — not one expensive part. Replacing the most visible component clears the warning only if that component was the cause.

If a contribution is refused

A refusal must be requested in writing if it is to be contested. Consumer protection and hidden-defect law provide the framework for challenging such a refusal. The written refusal, the diagnostic report and the invoices are the documents the file rests on.

Why declaring the case matters

Individual files remain isolated. A national census of cases is what establishes the repetitive nature of a failure, and that repetition is what gives weight to a claim. Owners of an affected Discovery Sport, Evoque or E-Pace can add their case to the census on adblue-haldex.com.
