P20E8 indicates low pressure in the AdBlue dosing circuit. On Peugeot 3008, 308 and 508, Citroën C4 and C5 Aircross, Opel and DS models with 1.5 or 2.0 BlueHDi engines, it often appears with an emissions warning and a countdown to a no-start lockout. A dealership may present it as a failed pump and propose a complete AdBlue tank replacement.
Why the tank, not the driver
The documented failure mode is consistent. AdBlue crystallises, blocks the injection port and then the tank breather. With the breather clogged, the plastic tank can collapse under suction. The pump then burns out. That sequence matters: the pump is not necessarily the first cause. The source describes a vacuum effect caused by crystallisation and a blocked breather.
Crystallisation in a poorly designed tank is a design defect, not normal wear or a maintenance failure. The fault can therefore point to the tank and its ventilation, not to owner negligence.
Evidence and scale
In February 2025, RTBF, Belgium’s French-speaking public broadcaster, aired an investigative report titled 'AdBlue: an epidemic of diesel car breakdowns'. The segment gathered over 306,000 views. Consumer organisation Testachats reported more than 3,500 complaints about AdBlue failures on Stellantis vehicles. Stellantis declined to appear on camera and replied in writing. It also published a written reimbursement grid for Belgian customers, which publicly acknowledges the scale of the problem.
Reported repair costs are £700–£1,200 in the UK and €800–€1,400 on the continent. Billing the customer for a complete tank replacement is contestable when the failure is linked to a hidden defect.
Legal basis for owners
In France, the legal warranty for hidden defects applies under article 1641 of the Code civil. More broadly, European consumer protection and hidden-defect law can be invoked. In the UK, the Consumer Rights Act 2015, s.9 on satisfactory quality is part of the framework. The key point is causation: if crystallisation and breather blockage cause the tank to collapse and the pump to fail, the design of the component is central.
