On many VW, Audi, Škoda and Seat vehicles with a DSG dual-clutch gearbox and a Haldex all-wheel-drive coupling, a common confusion can cause expensive damage: changing the DSG gearbox oil does not service the Haldex. The two systems have separate housings, separate oils and separate maintenance intervals. A service described as a 'complete transmission service' is not complete if the Haldex has been ignored.
DSG service and Haldex service are not interchangeable
The DSG gearbox sits in the main driveline and contains the clutch and gearbox oil. The Haldex coupling manages drive to the rear axle and has its own oil. On models such as the VW Golf 4Motion, the VW Tiguan, the Audi Q3 and A3 quattro, and the corresponding Škoda and Seat ranges, both circuits must be maintained independently. If a vehicle receives a gearbox service and the invoice mentions only the DSG, the Haldex has not been serviced. In that situation, the Haldex pump can fail before 50,000 miles.
