P20EE countdown on Renault and Dacia Blue dCi: prepare before the workshop

The P20EE fault code appears on several Renault and Dacia Blue dCi models, including the Clio, Captur, Duster and Kadjar. It means that the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system is working below its efficiency threshold: exhaust gases contain more NOx than normal. On this engine family, the physical cause is often crystallization blocking the AdBlue injector in the exhaust line.

When the dashboard shows “Check anti-pollution system”, the engine computer starts a countdown. On some vehicles the message displays a remaining distance: “engine lock in 1000 km” or “engine lock in 600 miles” depending on the market. When the countdown reaches zero, the vehicle will not restart. What was a repair that could be planned becomes an urgent stop.

Before the workshop: build your evidence

Take a photograph of the warning message and the odometer as soon as the countdown appears. The image dates the failure and provides a simple trace if the repair is disputed later. Do this before any work is authorized and before the vehicle is left in a workshop.

Before authorizing an intervention, ask the workshop for a written diagnostic. This document should identify the fault code and the cause the workshop intends to repair. In a later claim, the written diagnostic is much stronger than an oral explanation. If the same fault recurs, it shows that the repairer was informed of the P20EE condition from the beginning.

Erasing the code is not a repair

Clearing P20EE with a diagnostic tool does not treat the cause. If no repair is made, the countdown resumes. Cleaning or replacing the AdBlue injector is the logical repair when crystallization has blocked it, but on these engines it does not necessarily clear the code. In cases reported to this site, the engine ECU is locked by software; a generic reset may not work, and owners have been sent to a dealer for a software reset before the countdown clears. That dealer step creates a cost that is separate from the mechanical repair.

The recurrence of the same fault code on the same engine family may point to a serial defect. For owners, the relevant legal route is consumer protection and hidden-defect law. This article does not replace legal advice. Its purpose is more basic: if you have no date and no written diagnosis, your case is harder to document.
