How did a reputedly reliable transmission system become a major source of breakdowns? The answer lies in the transition between the 4th and 5th generation of the Haldex (BorgWarner) coupler.
The Removal of the Replaceable Filter
On the Haldex Gen 4, a filter cartridge trapped impurities. During servicing, both the oil AND the filter were changed. The pump was protected. For penny-pinching reasons, Gen 5 removed this filter, replacing it with a simple mesh screen that cannot be removed without taking out the pump.
The Disastrous Result
Deprived of a filter, the screen clogs with black sludge (friction debris). The pump strains to draw oil, overheats, and burns out. This is a technological regression that manufacturers (VW, Audi, Land Rover, Volvo) make you pay for. Report your Gen 5 failure on our registry.
