P20EE on Renault and Dacia Blue dCi: Legal Guarantee and Commercial Warranty

On Renault and Dacia Blue dCi engines, the P20EE fault code appears on models including Clio, Captur, Duster and Kadjar. It means the SCR system is operating below its efficiency threshold and NOx emissions are not being treated sufficiently. In many reported cases, the physical cause is crystallization blocking the AdBlue injector in the exhaust line. Cleaning or replacing the injector is the logical repair, but it does not always clear the code.

There is a second layer to the problem. When the anti-pollution warning appears, the engine computer starts a countdown. Depending on the market, the dashboard indicates 1000 km or 600 miles. When it reaches zero, the vehicle will not restart. Clearing P20EE with a diagnostic tool is not a repair. Owners have reported that after an independent repairer cleans or replaces the injector, the countdown continues because the engine ECU remains locked by software. The vehicle is then sent to a dealer for a software reset.

Which warranty applies?

The manufacturer's commercial warranty is separate from the legal guarantee of conformity. Under consumer law, the legal guarantee is owed by the seller and exists independently of any commercial promise. For an AdBlue failure that renders the vehicle unserviceable, this distinction matters: the first step is to identify the seller and invoke the legal guarantee of conformity when the vehicle is not in conformity with the contract.

The legal guarantee is not the only route. The hidden-defect guarantee is a distinct legal basis aimed at defects in design. A fault that repeats on the same engine family supports the claim that the failure is serial rather than isolated. In that situation, the claim is built on the underlying design of the SCR system, including the interaction between crystallization and the software lock.

Preparing a claim

  • Keep all maintenance invoices and repair records. They deprive the seller of arguing that the failure was caused by poor maintenance.
  • Use the repeated nature of P20EE on the Blue dCi family to show that the defect is not isolated.
  • Do not accept a software reset as a final repair if the hardware fault remains.

The P20EE countdown transforms a repair that could have been planned into an urgent constraint. Understanding the seller's obligations and the limits of the commercial warranty helps owners avoid paying twice for a defect that affects the same engine family.
