Modern diesel vehicles with selective catalytic reduction depend on AdBlue. This fluid is not a generic additive; it is governed by a precise specification. If another product is poured into the tank, the fluid ceases to be AdBlue under ISO 22241. This one fact can change the outcome of a warranty claim.
AdBlue is a normative fluid
ISO 22241 defines the composition of AdBlue, including its urea concentration and purity requirements. Any product added to the tank, no matter how harmless it claims to be, puts the fluid outside that specification. In a dispute, an unapproved additive is a simple argument for a manufacturer to refuse warranty coverage.
What crystallisation problems look like
Crystallisation is at the heart of a known failure mode on Stellantis BlueHDi engines. In some models, crystals have obstructed the tank breather, causing a vacuum effect. That vacuum can deform the plastic tank and damage the pump. A typical symptom is the warning message and a P20E8 code, indicating low reducing-agent pressure.
This sequence is important: the deposit is often on the vent, not on the pump itself. The pump fails because of the vacuum created by the blocked vent. A repair under warranty or a hidden-defect claim should be based on that documented failure. Adding an anti-crystallisation product would not remove the crystallisation from the system. It would simply change the fluid analysis, and the repairer could point to the additive as the cause of an out-of-specification operating condition.
Document, do not mask
The correct approach is to preserve evidence. Keep the original failure messages, record the code, take photos of a deformed tank if it is safe to do so, and note the vehicle's repair history. If a hidden-defect case is being prepared under consumer protection law, for example under Article 1641 of the French Civil Code in France, the burden is to show that the defect existed before the failure became apparent. A modified fluid helps no one.
AdBlue is not a product for improvisation. The strongest file is one that shows the true defect with an unaltered fluid.
